Calvin Lai Jr.

Lifelong Waterman • Champion Spearfisherman • Kona Firefighter

Calvin Lai is a highly respected Hawaiian spearfisherman with over 40 years of experience in freediving and underwater hunting throughout the islands. Born and raised in Hawaii, Calvin began spearfishing at the age of six, learning from his grandfather, Ceasar Rubio. It was through these early lessons that Calvin developed a lifelong respect for the ocean, its ecosystems, and the traditions of sustainable fishing in Hawaii.

Calvin’s accomplishments in the world of spearfishing are extensive. He is a 3-time United States National Spearfishing Champion, a former world record holder for Pacific Blue Marlin, and has set multiple Hawaii state spearfishing records. His skills and story have been featured on numerous local Hawaii television shows, celebrating his deep connection to the ocean and the local fishing community.

As a passionate advocate for ocean conservation, Calvin uses spearfishing as a way to support reef health by targeting invasive species and promoting sustainable fishing practices. His catches not only provide fresh, local seafood for island families but also contribute to preserving Hawaii’s delicate marine ecosystems.

In addition to his life on the water, Calvin serves the Big Island community as a full-time professional firefighter in Kona, Hawaii — a role that reflects his dedication to protecting both people and the natural environment.

Whether he's diving beneath the surface or serving on the front lines, Calvin Lai embodies the spirit of aloha, kuleana (responsibility), and connection to the land and sea.
